Opening Doors to Careers Young People Can See Themselves In
Young people cannot aspire to careers they have never been exposed to. Youth career education bridges that gap by connecting students to real professionals, real work environments, and real pathways into fields like environmental science, conservation, forestry, and natural resource management.
Greg Wolley has spent decades building programs that introduce young people, especially those from underrepresented communities, to career opportunities in STEM and natural resources.
Program Components
- Career Workshops that bring professionals of color into classrooms and community spaces
- Mentorship Connections that pair students with working professionals in their fields of interest
- Hands-On Experiences including field trips, lab visits, and project-based learning
- STEM Pipeline Development that creates clear pathways from education to employment
- Employer Partnerships that connect youth programs with organizations ready to hire
The Impact
When young people meet role models who look like them and hear their stories, something shifts. They begin to see themselves in careers that once felt out of reach. That shift in confidence is the foundation for everything that follows.
As April Ann Fong, a Biology and Environmental Sciences instructor at Portland Community College, shared: "Creating Tomorrow's Workforce provides workshops that inspire youth, and others exploring careers, by connecting them to professionals of color in the environmental field."
